He was illegitimate, but was legitimated on 22 December 1600.15
He obtained a legitimation under the Great Seal, 22 December 1600, and acquired considerable estates. He had a charter of confirmation to himself, and Jean Campbell his wife, of the castle of Kinclevin, in Perthshire, 25 May 1608. He had a charter 15 June 1624, of the lands of Bargany, from whence he took his ultimate designation, Carlock, and other lands in Ayrshire.16
