He was the third son of John, fifth Lord Lindsay of the Byres, and had a charter from Sir Thomas Smyth, chaplain of Lord Lindsay's aisle in the parish church of St. Andrews, with consent of John, Lord Lindsay and Patrick his son and heir-apparent, of certain lands in Drem, on 30 May 1550; and a charter of confirmation under the Great Seal of a charter by James Spens of Lathalland of the lands of Kittedie and Craigsanquhar on 31 July 1550. From his father he received the lands of Kilquhis.11
