He appears to have been in the train of Sir William Lindsay of the Byres, as the latter styles him 'our knight' in a charter to his son, probably dated 6 September 1397. There is some ground for supposing that his wife's name was Mary Leslie, a sister of Sir George Leslie, ancestor of the Earls of Rothes.7
