| Walter attended high school and spent two years in the US Navy. His parents immigrated from Ukraine and came to Chicago in 1948 where he attended Greer Mechanical School. He worked as an automobile mechanic until 1953 when he joined the Chicago Police Department. He bought a 1 1/2 story home in Chicago for his family with an apartment upstairs for his in-laws. He travelled all over the United States with his family, visiting relatives in Pennsylvania, and finally settled on purchasing 40 acres of farmland 1970, building the 4-room house with basement and garage. He did it singlehanded on vacation and time off. He enjoyed hunting deer in the winter months.7 | ||
