His parentage is nowhere stated, but he appears as John Hepburne of Rollanstoun from circa 1486 onwards. He was a bailie, and custumar, of Haddington; principal Steward of the Royal Household; had tacks of various lands, and was appointed Commissioner for letting Crown lands. In 1507 he granted a procuratory of resignation of Rowistoun's lands in the hands of the Sovereign, superior thereof, in favour of George Hepburne, his eldest son and apparent heir.6
